Found this #starwheel #tailstock in a bad shape on a company liquidation. I have wanted that type for a long time. This #schaublinrevolver was probably made in the late 50ies - matches the time of the #schaublin102vm.
I enjoy some features: the four-postition stops matching the revolver, and the original #schaublin #drillchucks on it. Don't know yet, if I'll really use the revolver (some fear about the accuracy). But with the W20 collet, it's an easy thing to change.
Looks really big mounted on the machine 🙂 Fun project – learned a lot refurbishing it.

Small #ikeahack for the #bekväm serving trolley 🙂 A new belt sander appeared in the #workshop! The front panel was drawn with #fusion360 and milled in #sheetmetal with the #PCNC440. The VFD and electronics were hidden in the bottom. To be able to tilt the machine, it needs to be lifted – feet turned on the #schaublin102vm. More info on the blog…

Diameter 0.38 mm (0.015 in) 3-flute endmill from #precisebits. And the results of some tests in steel on the #Tormach #PCNC440: 100 m/min with 100 mm/min on the left, 50 mm/min on the right part (top is only a reference). Each line increases the DOC from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm (LTR), the numbers are 0.2 mm deep. The slower one (on the right) looks definitively better – but probably it won’t beat the results of the ball endmill (tested a year ago). The diameter is much smaller though – and it’s a stub one, easier to use, healtier… 🙂

A big step forward! Today the clean carriage assembly found its place back on the #schaublin102vm. This was a lot of work – but if you like to do such things and are happy with the results, it’s worth the time 😉 Still a lot to do: the #tailstocks are waiting to be assembled, and some adjustments need to be made. While the paint on the parts dried, I took a closer look on the #crossslide. The top slide had a slight clearance on an unusual location: the #ballbearings couldn’t be tightened in place any more. The ball bearing cage is clamped by two hardened rings – the clamping force of those two rings is used to set the resistance of the hand wheel. The gap (0.37 mm) could easily be fixed with some cnc’ed shimmings – now it has a nice, snugly fit.

Really glad how the #sandblaster did his job (thanks M.W)! Some pieces showed three different #coats: probably the original paint was that kind of basalt grey (#RAL7012), which would also match to the date of manufacture. Nice to know – but since those parts should suit the rest of the machine, I’ll stick to the green already used. Now it’s time to clean the parts, lap, prime… well, you know the procedure. Have a nice week-end!

A small project: some custom feet for a talented #clockmaker (see last pic for an sample). Tapped through getting a blind hole with the brass sheet. Don't know how I managed to #braze the #brass base to this unknown #steel – but it almost ruined one of my #workbenches 😝. Note to myself: firebricks can overheat on the other end!

Changed the intended #design of the jaws a little bit. Although this isn’t beneficial to the tool itself, it reveals to be for me 😆 I simply prefer to work with tidy tools. Yep, perhaps a little bit «old styled», but hey – matches this tool, doesn’t it? And I learned a little bit more about the #pcnc440 and #ballendmills on the way…

Working on the next project: the 2-jaw-independent

Working on the next project: the 2-jaw-independent-chuck from #hemmingway_kit. First steps on the backside of the #faceplate (kinda). After that, fitting and drilling of the #w25-adaptor for the #schaublin #lathe. Those were probably the trickiest steps of this #project - having it on the lathe will ease the further work. The adaptor was an old #schaublin102vm #collet closer (size 3 or 4, I think) in quite a worn condition. Turning it down and using it on this project will save it from the #scrapbin 😉

A #brokenblade brought me to twiddle with the #bandsaw. The adjustment screws on the blade guides – is an old one (see #toolsandmods site) – but I wish I knew this one earlier. Bought an #mufflefurnace on good terms a while ago – and finally got it up and running 🙂 It’s an #Ovmat9, inside dimensions approx. 15x15x30 cm, working temperature 1100°C (tested 900°C). Holds the temp for quite a long time and seems to be in good condition. Really looking forward digging into the challenging world of #heattreating. BTW: the second picture was taken at the same time as the first (at about 350°C) – just with the lights turned on…
